St Andrew [St Andrew]
(1st century AD) the ↑patron saint of Scotland. He was one of the 12 apostles, the brother of St Peter. He became the patron saint of the ↑Picts in the 8th century, when, it is thought, his bones were brought to a town on the east coast of Scotland, later called ↑St Andrews. According to tradition, he was killed in Greece on a cross in the shape of an X, and so this cross is on the Scottish flag. Andrew is also the patron saint of Greece and Russia.
